Welcome to BKK, the Society for the Performing Arts, and thank you for visiting our newly launched website!
His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada appeared in this world in 1896 in Calcutta, India. He first met his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami, in Calcutta in 1922, who convinced him to dedicate his life to teaching Vedic knowledge. Srila Prabhupada became his student and eleven years later, his formally initiated disciple. In recognition of Srila Prabhupada’s learning and devotion, the Gaudiya Vaisnava Society honoured him in 1947 with the title ‘Bhaktivedanta’. A few years later he began work on his life’s masterpiece: a multi-volume translation of and commentary on the eighteen thousand verse Srimad-Bhagvatam (Bhagavata Purana). He also wrote Easy Journey to Other Planets and many other books. In 1965, Srila Prabhupada came to the United States to fulfill the vision of his spiritual master. Penniless, but unflinching in his divine purpose, he overcame all obstacles and established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness – ISKCON in July of 1966. Under his benevolent guidance and direction the society grew to become a worldwide confederation of more than one hundred asramas, schools, temples, institutes and farm communities. The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust was established in 1977 to publish his numerous books, which constitute a veritable library of Vedic philosophy, religion, literature and culture. Highly respected by the academic community for their authority, depth and clarity, they serve as standard text books in numerous college courses. Srila Prabhupada passed away on November 14, 1977 leaving behind an ever growing legacy for generation to come. |
